Why strategies, not memorized facts, build lasting multiplication fluency

Fluency means accurate, efficient, and flexible, not just fast. Skip Counting to Equal Groups is the bridge from repeated addition to multiplicative reasoning: a kid who can say "4 groups of 7, so 7, 14, 21, 28" is building the same mental structure every other strategy in this suite leans on. Each reveal shows the relationship behind the fact, something to think about and connect to facts kids already know.

Using Tens, Using Fives, Using Known/Near Facts, and Break Apart all lean on breaking a fact into friendlier pieces, the same move as 8 × 7 becoming 8 × (5 + 2), which is (8 × 5) + (8 × 2), or 40 + 16 = 56. Doubling (×2 to ×4 to ×8) and Doubling & Halving both rest on the same idea from the other direction: 3 × 5 × 2 found as 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30, is the same regrouping move as halving one factor while doubling the other. Doubling and halving is a real mental-math strategy in its own right, and it's distinct from the additive Compensation strategy in the Multi-Digit tool even though the names sound alike. The Commutative toggle makes 6 × 4 = 24, so 4 × 6 = 24 visible instead of just stated. The build order here, equal groups and arrays first, then the tens and fives landmark facts, then doubling, near facts, break-apart, and doubling-and-halving last, follows a real progression: concrete models before landmark facts, landmark facts before derived facts, and property-based strategies once kids have enough anchor facts to decompose from.
