Why the recording matters as much as the counting

Choral counting is the whole class counting aloud together while you record what's said, but it's how you record it that turns chanting into math. Write the count in a structured grid and kids start noticing pattern: what repeats down a column, what happens at the end of a row, where a number "should" go before it's even said. Keep the track visible instead of wiping it clean, and pause at the end of each row so the class can predict and justify before you move on. Count forward and backward, and start from wherever you want, not just zero. A kid who can only start from one hasn't separated the number sequence from the act of counting objects yet. Ask "how do you know what comes next?" instead of racing for speed.
