Why strategy-based fact practice beats a timer

Fluency isn't speed — it's being accurate, efficient, and flexible with facts. This tool never shows a naked timer. Instead it organizes practice by strategy — doubles, near doubles, make ten, using ten — and every reveal shows the visual model behind the strategy, so students see why it works. Research on how children learn facts shows they move from counting, to reasoning from known facts (derived-fact strategies), to full fluency; the reasoning stage is where understanding is built, and it's the stage drill-based practice skips. Showing 8 + 5 becoming 10 + 3 on a ten frame, or a near double as "a double and one more," gives students a mental model they can rebuild whenever a fact slips. The subtraction strategies are built to match — using think-addition rather than treating subtraction as a separate thing to memorize.
