Where does 37 actually go?
Placing a number on a line is different from just naming it. Kids have to think about its size relative to 0, the midpoint, the far end. That sense of magnitude is one of the best predictors of how kids do in math overall, and the good news is it's trainable: practicing estimation carries over to rounding, fractions, and the coordinate plane later on. Keep the line up during think time so kids can point and argue their case. Get a class guess locked in before you reveal the real spot. The gap between where they guessed and where it actually lands is the part that sticks.
