Ten is a unit too

Place value comes down to one idea: a group of ten can be treated as a single unit, just like one dot is a unit. This tool flashes base-ten pieces, rods of ten and grouped ones, briefly enough that kids see the tens-and-ones structure instead of counting every dot one by one. On the reveal, count the tens back in first (10, 20, 30) then bond the total into its tens and ones, tying the picture to the written number. Being able to name the same amount more than one way, like 30 and 14 or 3 tens and 14 ones, is what separates kids who understand two-digit numbers from kids who just recite them. Keep the flash short and ask "how many tens did you see?" That question is exactly what regrouping later depends on.
